Why Southern Belgium Is the Most Underrated Travel Region in Europe?

When people think about Belgium, they picture Bruges’ canals, Brussels’ Grand Place, or perhaps Antwerp’s fashion scene. Very few look south. Yet beyond the postcard cities lies a region that quietly offers something increasingly rare in Europe: authenticity without performance.
Southern Belgium, Wallonia remains one of the continent’s most underrated travel destinations. And that is precisely its strength.

A Landscape That Breathes

Unlike the densely visited urban centers of Western Europe, southern Belgium is defined by space. Rolling hills, limestone cliffs, river valleys and vast forests shape the landscape. The Viroin Valley, the Calestienne region and the forests around Chimay offer hiking routes where you may walk for hours without crossing large tourist groups.

It is not dramatic like the Alps, nor Mediterranean in character. Its beauty is softer, slower — and deeply restorative.

In a time when “overtourism” has become a European problem, Wallonia still feels untouched.

Villages That Still Belong to Their Inhabitants

Many European regions have preserved their architecture but lost their soul. Southern Belgium is different. Villages like Vierves-sur-Viroin, often listed among Wallonia’s most beautiful villages, are not open-air museums they are living communities.

Local cafés are still frequented by residents, not only visitors. Conversations happen in French dialects. Traditions are not recreated for tourists; they simply continue.

This subtle difference changes the entire travel experience.
